COMPANY TIMELINE

Starting out as a small bur reconditioning service, SGS Tools grew to become one of the largest manufacturer of solid carbide tools in the U.S.

Now, as a part of the KYOCERA corporation, KYOCERA SGS Precision Tools has grown to become the global standard in solid round carbide cutting tools.

1951

The Company was founded by Seybold, Graves and Stahl in a small garage in Akron, OH.  Began business as a reconditioning operation of cutting tools in the local market.

1966

The first automated bur grinder purchased.

1980

First carbide inspection lab was built.

1983

First computer-controlled machine was purchased.

1984

Jack Haag acquired full ownership of SGS Tool Company

1984

Establishes Action Super Abrasives (ASA).  A secure source of high quality, consistent diamond coated grinding wheels.

1985

First exhibit at EMO in Hannover, Germany

1989

SGS Tool Europe GmbH established in Germany.

1996

Established Hardcoating Technologies Ltd (HTL).  The in-house control of critical element to life of cutting tool.

1996

SGS Beijing Sales Office Established.

1999

SGS Promeca purchased in France.

2000

Tom Haag named President & COO

2000

SGS purchases patent rights to the Z-Carb High Performance End Mill

New Drill Manufacturing Facility and future SGS Manufacturing Campus

2007

SGS innovative patent to further define variable geometry with the Z-Carb AP

2009

SGS Tool Company acquires Oak View Tools of Columbia City, IN.  A manufacturer of solid carbide and stainless steel tools for orthopedic operations.

2012

SGS focuses efforts on high performance solutions by divesting the bur product group.

2012

SGS wins prestigious American Eagle Award for producing a single customer cost savings of over $200,000!

2012

Further investment into global manufacturing with expansion of UK manufacturing and coating facility.  10 CNC 5/6-axis production (special focus) + coating chamber.

2014

SGS makes further investment into research and development with a $1,000,000 investment into the new Global Innovation Center.  R&D expands from 1,500 square foot to 6,000 square foot space.

2015

Awarded 2nd American Eagle Award!  SGS successfully reduced a customer's machine time by over 100 hours.  Increased tool life 12 times over baseline and reduced the cost per part by over 92%.  Thus generating a cost savings to the customer of over $250,000!

2015

Seeking high performance solutions, SGS puts further capital into R&D adding a Makino F8, a high speed camera and thermal imaging to their arsenal.

2015

SGS expands the end mill operation by building a 75,000 square foot facility on its 20-acre campus in Cuyahoga Falls.

2016

SGS is purchased by the KYOCERA Corporation.

2016

KYOCERA SGS Tech Hub is Announced.  A $9,500,000 investment in Danville, VA.  Supplementing the KSPT business model and other KYOCERA cutting tool business units.

2018

KYOCERA SGS Tech Hub opens its doors.  With a focus on custom cutting tool solutions and exploring new technologies, the Tech Hub can provide not simply a tool, but a complete scope of services from conception through expiration.
